Frequently Asked Questions

Curriculum/Equipment Questions

Does Eleven Fifty Academy offer night or part-time classes?

We offer a part-time program. The program is held on-site on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays instructors have office/virtual hours if you are needing help on your assignments. The part-time program lasts a total of 24 weeks.

How is the curriculum determined for my class?

On a quarterly basis, we review our curriculum with employer partners. Our curriculum is crafted to align with what is needed for an entry level coding position. Additionally, the instructors for each class have experience in the field and add practical tips and hints that can’t be known without application experience.

What equipment will I need for my class?

For our immersive programs, preparing your laptop is one of the best ways to prepare for class. In order to arm you for success, below are our minimum requirement for your laptop. Given that you will need your laptop for class work and in the evenings for homework, you will need a laptop rather than a desktop. It is also recommended by our previous students that a mouse and mouse pad are valuable (though not required) as well.

If you have a Windows laptop, here is what you will need to be successful:

  • At least 4 gigs of RAM
  • At least 250 gig of hard drive space
  • Intel i5 or greater/ AMD a10-7800 or greater
  • Windows Version 10 or newer
  • Latest Firefox or Chrome web browser
  • You will also want to clean-off unneeded files and defragment your hard drives before class to maximize your laptop performance during class.

If you have a Mac computer, here is what you will need to be successful:

  • 2011 MacBooks or newer
  • At least 80 gig hard drive of space
  • Latest MacOSx
  • Latest Firefox or Chrome web browser (no Safari)
  • You will also want to clean-off unneeded files before class to maximize your laptop performance during class.

If you have a question or concern about your laptop, feel free to reach out to learning@elevenfifty.org and one of our instructional staff members will help out!

How do I know if I am progressing as needed when in the program?

During the program, there are “gates” to help calibrate your success in the program: Gold, Blue, and Red Badges. To earn a badge, there is an assessment and grading rubric that is used to determine if the student has met the expectations. Each grading rubric measures whiteboard coding (problem-solving logic thinking), mini-projects (application skills), written assessment (knowledge), and project work presentation. The complexity of each rubric and assessment increases as you progress through the program.

Why do you offer Python, JavaScript, and .NET programs?

Based on feedback from our employee partners, these are the languages that are most demand for entry-level coding positions. We work hard to make sure you are getting relevant skills that lead to employment. We frequently gauge the needs of the industry and adjust our course and curriculum accordingly.

What material should I study to best prepare for the class?

We, at Eleven Fifty Academy, are focused on maximizing your learning experience while you are with us. This means there might be times where you need to do a bit of preparation. And, other times, being well-rested is the best preparation possible. For each specific class or workshop, check the course description for any prerequisites for your class.

Joining us for a 12 or 24-week immersive program? You will receive preparation work when you enroll. This preparation work is due at Orientation, which is approximately 1 week prior to the start of a class.

How much homework can I expect?

With the acceleration of the program, spending time in the evening revisiting, reviewing, and writing code is expected. While this time can vary per student and skill level, the consensus from former students is, on average, 2 hours a night and 5-10 hours on the weekend.
