Can Anyone Learn to Code? Eleven FIfty Academy Coding Bootcamp, Indianapolis, Indiana

Chances are when you hear “computer programmer” a certain image pops into your head: young, male, and awkwardly nerdy.

From Bill Gates to Mark Zuckerberg, we’ve seen generations of coding wonderkids transform our lives with their creations while also shaping our perception of programmers.

But the truth is you don’t have to be a hoodie-wearing twenty-something or an awkward kid working out of your dad’s garage to make it in the field. Programmers of all genders and ages make up the tech field—including people exactly like you.

Whether you’re fresh out of high school or hoping to make a mid-career leap, we firmly believe anyone can learn to code through a coding bootcamp.

We also believe anyone can possess the following skills and characteristics that it takes to be a successful coder.

Passion. Any person young or old can write a few lines of code, but if you don’t have a passion for it, you’re not going to be successful. Being a programmer can be incredibly rewarding—creatively and financially—-but a love of the field is a necessity.

Positivity. Whether you’re flying solo on a project or tackling a complicated problem with a team, positivity is incredibly important for overcoming challenges and not letting them get to you.

Creativity. Most associate coding with math. If numbers make you break out in a sweat, have no fear: coding is more a creative field than anything else. It’s the process of building something from nothing and creatively solving problems.

Love of Learning. New languages, new best practices, and new technologies continue to drive the programming field forward, meaning coding is a lifelong learning affair. If you don’t love learning and taking time to better your skillset, becoming a programmer likely isn’t a great fit.

Persistence. Persistence is probably one of the most important qualities of a coder. Learning to code consists of a series of breakthrough moments in understanding. It’s what you do in between those moments, when you’re confused and frustrated, that counts. The only way through is to stick with it.
