What Is Coding?

If you pay attention to the news or what’s happening in the job market, you might have noticed a few words frequently being used. Programmer. Code. Software engineer. Coder. Programming languages. Developer. These words, for many, are shrouded in mystery and can be confusing. For others, these words are their whole life. Which leads to the question, what do they even mean?

What is coding and what do you do with it?

In short, coding is the act of writing code, but the short answer leaves more questions unanswered than answered. Coding is a little more complicated than that. Code is essentially a series of instructions that are used to manipulate data on a computer or other device. It could be your iPhone or the Internet-enabled crock pot you just purchased, either way, code is what tells that device what to do, how to make it look, and when to do it.

What are coding languages?

Just like people all over the world speak different languages, the various programming languages are used to accomplish different tasks. Some languages can be used for multiple purposes, but other languages are very specific in what they can do and cannot do. For example, CSS is used primarily to make websites and online pages look incredible. JavaScript, though, is used to make the same pages more functional. Together, the different coding languages can accomplish more.
