It’s true! Tech is one of the hottest fields in the job market, with an abundance of opportunity, growth, and great salaries. The good news is that even if you have zero experience, there’s plenty of opportunity to learn. But is coding the right career move for you? Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about learning to code.

The simple answer: no, but it does take dedication! Learning to code is a marathon and even the best continue to learn and evolve. Any coder can tell you there are highs and lows, but if you’re devoted to learning and love the thrill of solving problems (even with the headaches they can bring), you can absolutely learn to code. Sound like you? A coding bootcamp is the perfect way to get the foundation you need to break into the profession.

While some coding conundrums call for basic math, most coding is more logic-based than anything else. Those who aren’t great at math or who don’t like it can still be successful at coding.

How long does it take to learn to code?

It depends! Multiple factors play a role in how long it takes you to learn to code, including programming language, amount of time you dedicate to learning, and your end goals. An individual who enters a full-time coding bootcamp, like Eleven Fifty’s JavaScript Bootcamp, will have a baseline proficiency in 12 weeks. An individual learning in their spare time at home may take six or more months. It’s important to remember, though, that learning code is an ongoing process. Developing new skills on-the-job is pretty much guaranteed and professionals of all levels are constantly expanding their knowledge. A 2018 Stack Overflow survey found that approximately 90% of all developers and half of all current professionals have taken time to learn new tools, languages, and more on their own.

What are the steps to becoming a computer programmer?

There’s no right or wrong path to becoming a computer programmer, but here are a few steps to keep in mind: Pick a specialty. Are you interested in being a front-end web developer? An app developer? A database engineer? This will guide your training and help make you more marketable. Pick a learning style. Some study programming in college, but that can take years. Online programs are popular options for the casual coder. Of course, we think that bootcamps are ideal. They give you easy, in-person access to an instructor and peers, while also having resources like career counseling and networking connections. Develop a portfolio. A professional portfolio of sample projects is often key to landing a job. Work toward a few polished projects that will show off your skillset in your chosen area of programming. At Eleven Fifty, we provide guidance and encourage all students to leave with a portfolio.

Which programming language is best for getting a job?

It all depends what type of job you want to get! Web developers need to be well-versed in languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. An aspiring video game developer will need to know C++ and C#. JavaScript, however, is the most popular language according to Stack Overflow, with more than 70% of professional developers knowing and using the language.
