Coding bootcamps should be focused on student outcomes, not driving bottom lines.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Education, at any and all levels, should be about students not profits. Coding bootcamps, much like higher level education institutions, have an obligation to help students learn and grasp the concepts, skills, and knowledge required after graduation. However, when the mission isn’t focused on people (students), then that obligation, the sole reason the institution should exist, is simply lost. Boards of Trustees, provosts, presidents, and other managing entities become so focused on maintaining and increasing profits that the one mission they should be focused on is lost.

For People, Not Profit

At Eleven Fifty Academy, our mission is focused on helping people. Not only do we believe coding can help change individual lives, but we believe it can help communities flourish, businesses grow, and individuals feel actualized. For our staff, it isn’t about the profits we bring in as a new SmartStart immersive coding program begins. It’s about the lives we impact on a daily basis through our instruction, career readiness assistance, and outreach programs. By focusing on people instead of profits, coding schools have the ability to impact lives in the classroom and well beyond the four walls of an educational system. When the mission isn’t about bottom lines and increasing the dollars coming into the institution, coding bootcamps, students, and communities can thrive.

Coding bootcamps curriculum guides students to career placement and enhancement.

Through Eleven Fifty’s SmartStart programs, over 100 students have graduated with new skills, strengths, and the power to recode their future. Because our focus is on student outcomes and helping them best prepare for their future outside of the coding bootcamp environment, we spend time working on career readiness skills. While the main focus on the program is on learning and developing the coding skills they need to be a coder, it’s also about helping them prepare to be a successful employee. We teach effective communication and teamwork because coders don’t work alone in a dark room at the back of the office anymore. We teach students how to build a portfolio and resume that makes employers’ heads turn. We practice interviewing and assessing goals so students know how to further their careers.

Our crafted curriculum is guided by employers looking for today’s top emerging tech talent. By partnering with companies seeking fresh talent, we can better match the needs of employers with the skills of students. The focus isn’t on getting students into the program and out of the door. It’s about helping them develop into career-ready employees and setting them up for a successful future.

Outreach programs have helped students across the state of Indiana.

Since part of the Eleven Fifty Academy mission is focused on closing the nation’s technology skills gap, we believe the best place to start is in our communities. Through outreach programs, our team has inspired over 24,000 students of various backgrounds, ages, and skill sets. We’ve partnered with schools and organizations in over 25 Indiana communities to spread the power of coding.

By 2020, there will be over 1 million computer jobs open and only 400,000 computer science students. It’s not too late to change those numbers, but to do that, coding bootcamps have to extend their reach beyond their four walls and into the communities. By going out into our communities and spreading the power of coding, we can transform individual lives and entire communities.[/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Learn About Eleven Fifty’s Outreach in Michigan City” color=”danger” align=”center” link=”url:%2Fmichigan-city-week-coding%2F|||”][vc_column_text]While the goal of education has never shifted away from the student, the goal of institutions including coding bootcamps has. It’s time to make the mission of education about people, not profit. It’s time to focus on student outcomes and not bottom lines. When we do this, we can positively impact individuals, communities, and eventually the world.
